Is Rooster Decor Right for Your Kitchen?

Country Rooster Kitchen RackRooster decor is an enduring trend that is experiencing a renewal of interest, although it can hardly be said to have ever gone away. What is it about the rooster that makes it such an enduring element of home decor?

Roosters have been incorporated into culture since ancient times. The Greeks recognized it as the symbol of the new day, and the Chinese incorporated it into their astrology. The rooster is commonly associated with a positive energy, leadership and vigilance.

In American culture, who is unfamiliar with the traditional weather vane bearing a strutting rooster at its top? These have often been found atop churches of some denominations, and are thought to symbolize a call to prayer to start each new day, regardless of which way life’s winds may be blowing.

Roosters are also noted for their brilliant plumage. It seems that everything about this creature is loud and ‘out there’. Is it any wonder that so many people find it an apt expression of the upbeat side of their personalities, and use it accordingly?

Certainly, the most common location in the home for the employment of rooster decor is the kitchen. Its bright colors and rustic charm lend themselves to use in the room where so much of life happens, especially with regard to sustenance. Also, many families tend to gather in the kitchen, and its nice to have an up beat theme there to encourage expression and good feeling.

Obviously, application of a rooster theme will employ rooster images in a variety of formats, from wall hangings to place mats, table cloths, towels, salt and pepper shakers… you name it! A quick look online will reveal hundreds, if not thousands, of rooster-themed items for those who may not be so creative or who experience a mental block about the matter.

A rooster decor theme also invites the application of bright colors to the walls. The symbolism of the rooster’s comb can be carried out through the installation of a colorful border at the ceiling line of the walls.

The bathroom is another area that lends itself to the application of rooster decor. Generally of a smallish size relative to the other living areas of the house, it can easily be overwhelmed with the energetic symbolism, though. Still, even a rooster-themed shower curtain may not be too much. Some bright color in the form of some figurines and maybe a picture or two or three might give a good appearance. To the extent that rooster decor is used in the other areas of the house, it will be consistent and give a sense of continuity to carry it over to the bathroom.

While attractive and even inspiring, rooster decor doesn’t so much mix with formality. Thus, it’s more appropriately applied in a family room than a living room. Application of very bright colors in either of these areas, which tend to be of a quieter nature than the kitchen, may be going a bit far.

Still, the family room, which is often found to have dark paneled walls, can benefit from the distribution of colorful rooster elements throughout. Consider a throw rug or perhaps some rooster pillows. Rooster figurines can add charm and look perfectly in place on the mantle. You can add a wreath in ‘roosterish’ colors. In light of the rooster’s association with the sun, it goes well with the use of sunflowers.

Whatever direction you may decide to pursue, be certain that you can find rooster decor from a variety of sources. In light of its long history as a decorative theme, garage sales and flea markets are fertile ground for hunting. Naturally, department stores will always have some selection on hand. However, the internet provides access to a number of providers that specialize in rooster decor, a testament to its longevity and staying power.

New Security Devices for Home and Family

There is no doubt that security is extremely important in today’s society. Everyone needs to be aware of the options available to provide them with a safe and secure way of life. Of course technology is changing everyday and the public may not always know what they have available to them. Here is a look at some new security devices on the market, and how they could benefit your family.

Keep Track of Your Children

Wireless child tracking devices are a new trend in child safety. Not only do these devices give you peace of mind when taking your child into busy situations but they are easy to use and rather inexpensive. There are several types and brands available but most commonly a wireless child tracking kit comes with a handheld unit and a tagging device. One such kit consists of a handheld unit and three tags which can be worn as wristbands. If one of your tagged “items” ventures too far out of your range the unit will sound off. If this happens you simply walk around until the beep starts getting louder and more frequent signaling that you are getting closer to the tag or child. Other kits or models involve the use of a cell phone and act like GPS tracking devices. You can receive alerts on your phone when your child or teen is out of a certain zone and can also be alerted if your child or teen is located inside a speeding vehicle.

Advanced Monitoring Systems

Cameras and monitoring software are available to consumers with new advanced features that allow you to keep an eye on the house no matter where you are. Although this technology has been around for a while the features available have drastically changed with the use of the internet. For instance, a home security camera with remote access and motion sensing will allow you to see what is happening inside and outside your home from any computer. Many companies have developed apps so that you can even monitor your home from a smart phone. These camera kits can work in tandom with an alarm system or independently with online services that save the video for you.

Dual Purpose Motion Sensors

Another new rather inexpensive security device available to consumers is motion sensing home phones. These can be set up in your home and upon detection of motion will dial a specified phone number. While you may still want to consider the different home security systems available to you, these phones can be a good starting point. Some models are equipped with microphones allowing the person to whom it calls to listen for a specified amount of time to determine whether the person is an intruder or a recognized voice. Other models simply dial specified phone numbers upon detection of motion to alert them that someone is inside their home.

Homes Can Benefit From A Green Clean

The environmental movement is at a pinnacle in the modern world.  There are many concerns for the environment and the future of the earth.  People everywhere are switching to green vehicles, jobs, and living styles.  One very simple and healthful way to stay green is to use green cleaning products and practices.

Typical household cleaners contain a barrage of scary chemicals that can be dangerous if ingested or breathed in.  The production of many of these items is detrimental to the environment or uses unsustainable materials like petroleum.  Fortunately, it is very easy and low cost for anyone to switch to a green cleaning regimen.

There are a number of green cleaning products available in stores everywhere.  Nature’s Source offers an array of traditional cleaning brands such as Scrubbing Bubbles, Windex, and Shout, in a plant based formulation.  These new blends are ninety-nine percent natural, with the one percent un-natural portion made up of dyes and fragrance.  These products are suitable for use on the same surfaces that the traditional cleaners are used on, including counter tops, fixtures, and toilet bowls.

Arm and Hammer has a series of cleaners that are plant based and are available in refillable bottles to save money and re-use bottles.

Seventh Generation has been manufacturing environmentally safe cleaning and other household products for over twenty years.  A number of cleaning materials are available from this company, including disinfectants that are proven to kill certain flu viruses.
It is also very easy to find products already in the home to use for safer cleaning.  Vinegar, baking soda, and warm water can be combined to create an effective all-purpose cleaner.  Baking soda can be sprinkled on a carpet or furniture, then vacuumed to eliminate odors such as pet smells.  Baking soda and liquid detergent can be mixed to make a soft scrub for showers and tubs. Liquid detergent, vinegar, and water make a useful window cleaner.

Green-conscious cleaning is not only better for the environment, it is better for one’s health and wallet as well.

Hair Transplants are Not a Home Project

I was surprised the other day when a friend of mine that I had not seen in several months appeared at my door.  What surprised me about him was that he had a lot more hair on his head been there the last time I saw him.  I guess I must have looked a little bit surprised, because he just sort of laughed and shook his head and then explained that he had gotten hair implants.

I never really thought about it, but I guess hair transplants and the technology behind them have gotten a lot better than they used to be.  Previously, I would have thought that I would be able to spot any hair transplant a mile away.  The truth is though, if I had not known that my friend had been balding for several years, I don’t think I would have picked up on the transplant at all.

Our discussion turned into a little bit of a learning experience for me because honestly, I knew nothing about hair transplants previously.  My friend explained that it is a permanent procedure and that he was pretty nervous going into it because undoing the work is not a simple fix.  He also explained that the whole procedure was pretty time-consuming and that he was still a little bit nervous that not all of the grafts would survive.

It is kind of silly I guess, but I really never thought about what hair transplants would look like up close.  From what I saw, my friend’s procedure seemed to go well.   I can definitely understand how it would be a pretty intense experience to undergo.  I suppose if you’re considering having the procedure done, you need to weigh that against the thought of losing your hair.
