The Steps of a Fireplace Refacing Job

Fireplaces come in a variety of designs and with features for today’s homeowner. Older homes often have a fireplace that looks outdated. Several solutions exist in terms of completely replacing the fireplace or just freshening it up. This will definitely change the look of your space. One issue with a complete replacement is cost. You can get an equally exciting look with a fireplace refacing job.

There are natural or cultured stone veneers that are the perfect choice for a refacing project like this. A nice tile could work well, too. The veneers give you a very nice finished look and appear very elegant.  This job can be considered environmentally sensitive in many ways, too.  While there are some downsides to using man-made materials and some agents are not the friendliest, it is still better in terms of energy and disposal ‘costs’ to the environment.

As is the case with most remodeling projects, step one is cleaning. Cleaning includes removal of broken or old bricks and also scrubbing debris away.  This will not only ensure a better surface for the mortar to be applied to, but will make sure it lasts long as well.  This will also allow you to work more quickly.  After a good cleaning, you’re ready for the next step.

The next phase involves preparing and mixing the mortar. Prepping involves hanging the cement backer board if you’re using that. If you are going right over the existing brick, then you can apply the mortar directly. The rule of thumb is to mix your mortar until it is the consistency of peanut butter.

The next step is to ‘back butter’ your stone pieces using your mortar mix you just made. This is simply the term used to describe applying your mortar mix to the back of the stones before setting them into place. You’ll want to ensure that you have a level line upon which to set your stones. There is no need to apply grout to these stones, so you can stack them right on top of one another. The natural or cultured shape of these stones give them enough spacing.

Make sure that the joint lines are staggered for a more natural looking design. Smaller sized rooms will allow you to use a smaller stone. In larger spaces, larger stone pieces will look more proportional and also create a more stout looking fireplace. Have fun and remember that your fireplace refacing job is going to look great!
