Garage Floor Safety Tip

During the winter garages are a big factor in accidents at the home.  The vast majority of these accidents involve slips and falls usually as a person is getting out of the car arriving home.  Falling in a garage can be very dangerous because the floors are almost always concrete and that is a very unforgiving surface to land on.  In recent years most municipalities have enacted laws requiring bicycle riders to wear helmets because of the damage which can be caused just by falling on a road.  The same possibility exists if you slip and hit your head in the garage.  Brain damage is quite possible so slips and falls should be alleviated.

The best way to make this area is your home safer is to apply an anti-slip garage floor sealant.  This will actually accomplish two things.  First it will give you better traction when the floor is wet and slick and, second, it will protect the floor from damage like chipping.  The procedure is really quite easy but it does require about two half days of work if you are going to do it yourself.  The best sealant to apply is an epoxy because it cures hard and it is easy to apply the non-slip medium as it cures.

Epoxies consist of two parts a resin and a hardener.  After the floor surface is prepared the two ingredients are mixed together and rolled out on the floor.  Usually a nap paint roller is used for applying the garage floor sealer.  Once the floor has been coated the anti-slip ingredient is spread over the top.  This is usually a gritty material like sand but you can’t just use regular beach sand because of the salt content.  The little sand grains each act like a small gripper and this make it almost impossible to have your feet slip out from underneath you even if you have rain water dripping on an oil slick.

This summer would be a great time to make your garage floor safer for next winter.
