Attic Conversions

When considering home improvement ideas, one that might not come immediately to mind is converting an attic to residential living area or perhaps for an office. After all the attic is pretty much ‘out of sight and out of mind’ for most of us except when it comes time to get down or put away the Christmas lights.

However, although it’s not a mission for the faint of heart, converting an attic into usable space may provide benefits sufficient to justify the investment in time, money and effort. After all, the area is under roof and generally rather wide open, which can provide a lot of flexibility for creative planning.

Attic ConversionsNevertheless, there are some things that must be kept in mind when considering this particular home improvement idea. First, and immediately obvious on entering the space, one must be sure that there’s sufficient headroom and lack of obstructions in the space. Older homes are more likely to have usable space in the attic than those built in recent decades. Still, it may be possible to have the roof raised if other considerations justify it. Framing members that obstruct free passage can often be replaced with alternative means of support.

These tasks are well beyond the abilities of almost all ‘do it yourselfers’, however, and will require the services of at least a qualified contractor, and possibly an engineer. Before getting too far into the planning of converting an attic, it might be best to call in a qualified person even if there are no headroom or obstruction issues.

One critical consideration is whether or not the floor in the attic is capable of supporting the weight of furniture and people. Many contractors, especially in the days before routine civil inspection of new construction, tended to use the least expensive materials that would do the job without regard for future possibilities. In the case of the attic, the supports would have been intended merely to hold up the ceiling below.

A contractor or engineer will be familiar with both the practical and legal suitability of a given structure. In most, if not all jurisdictions, an undertaking of the magnitude of converting an attic will bring the attention of the building inspector, who will have to issue necessary permits for the work. Some building inspectors will be willing to come out and assess the suitability of the space for renovation. Others will not care to venture any such opinion, and will limit themselves to approving the written plans submitted by an engineer, contractor or even the homeowner. Of course, once construction begins the building inspector will in fact inspect the progress and suitability of the work as it goes along. Although this may seem a nuisance, it’s far preferable to having a calamity occur.

Whether you get advice from a building inspector, a contractor or an engineer, it’s most certainly worth the investment of time and even some money to get professional input before going too far with your home improvement ideas for attic space. It will also be worth your while to spend some time and effort clearing out the space so as to allow access to all of it for your professional. Something that remains hidden from view that you don’t consider significant may actually be of great importance in the assessment of the work that needs to be done.

Of course, while awaiting the initial inspection by a professional, it’s still possible to have some creative enjoyment. In fact, it’s a good idea to have a wish list of the things that you would find desirable for the renovated space. If the professional knows that you intend to use the space as a music studio for your piano practice, or as a space for some indoor gardening, he’ll be able to assess the space appropriately from the start. He can advise you of the limits of what can be accomplished, and allow you to save your creative energy for something more doable.

Converting an attic can provide a wide range of benefits, from increased living space to a significant increase in a home’s value, especially in a desirable neighborhood. It requires more careful forethought and planning than most other projects, though, so proceed carefully right from the start.

Ceiling Water Damage

Ceiling Water DamageHousehold water damage is always bad news, but when it occurs in a ceiling the problem is compounded. In extreme cases, water can accumulate behind a drywall ceiling, slowly permeating and weakening its structure until it bursts through and soaks and even ruins everything beneath.

Here are some things to think about that make ceiling repairs more challenging than wall repairs.

The first thing to do when you spot the signs of discoloration and dampness on your ceiling is to identify the source. If you have a leak in your plumbing, that qualifies as an emergency and you should immediately shut off all water to the vicinity of the affected area.

Be aware that if you have a leak in your plumbing, water could be pouring into the affected area at a high rate. It’s possible that there are many gallons of water accumulated behind the ceiling covering material. Extreme caution should be used when venturing under such an area, especially if the ceiling itself is bowing downward.

Once the source of the water is stopped in such a case, it will be necessary to penetrate the ceiling and allow the water to drain in a controlled way, and the sooner the better. Common sense should prevail in undertaking this work. Lay down plastic sheeting under and all around the affected area and have someplace for the water to drain. You can’t have too many buckets for this project, as once the ceiling is penetrated, the water will flow until it’s gone.

Another common source of ceiling water damage is a leaking shower pan. While not an emergency, per se, this is a very serious problem, and fixing the cause will be a major project.

Most often, however, the source of ceiling water damage will be a leak in the roof or maybe a wall of the structure. You may be able to address such an issue by the simple expedient of catching the flow in buckets pending repair of the source of the leak.

In any case, until the water’s source is accounted for and stopped, there is little point in trying to effect repairs to the ceiling water damage itself.

In any case in which you find ceiling water damage, once the source is identified and accounted for, make a call to your insurance agent. Some or all of the costs of repairs may be covered by your homeowners policy. Repairing these calamities is certain to be an involved and messy process, and if you can have it professionally done, you’ll be better off.

One thing to consider if you’re in a position to have to do the work yourself is that drywall repairs, while not necessarily difficult in theory, can present a lot of practical difficulty. Drywall is very heavy stuff, and applying it to a ceiling in large pieces is a two man job for most people, or a lift will have to be rented and brought in.

Depending on the height of your ceiling, anticipate having to provide some type of elevated platform on which to work. Making repairs to ceiling water damage from just a ladder is possible, but count on having to move the ladder repeatedly.

Movable scaffolding can be rented relatively cheaply. Given that drywall repairs can take several days depending on whether you seal the joints with ordinary drywall compound or use a fast setting mix.

Professionals will use a fast setting mix, as they are able to make smooth joints quickly. The average do it yourself type person may find himself over-matched by the speed needed to work with a fast setting compound.

The point is, drywall repairs, especially ceiling drywall repairs, can be complicated and frustrating, and in any case will require going over the area affected a number of times to apply and sand several coats of compound and finally to prime and paint the repairs. Having a platform to work from that allows access to all or as much as possible of the damaged area will be a blessing, as you will come to think on your one hundredth trip up the ladder.

Should You Use Strand Woven Bamboo Flooring?

Strand woven bamboo flooring is an engineered product made from highly processed strips of bamboo. After boiling to remove insects and sugars which attract insects, the material is pressed into the shape we find on store shelves with resins as a binding agent. This pressing takes place under a combination of high heat and extreme pressure.

There is some concern in the marketplace because most bamboo flooring is manufactured in China, where bamboo grows as naturally as do forests in the United States. Anyone who has paid attention to the news in recent years is aware that the Chinese often cut corners in their manufacturing processes. This results in significant unevenness in quality among the various bamboo flooring products out there.

One particular concern with regard to bamboo flooring is that some samples have been found to contain formaldehyde in the resins used to bind the bamboo strips. Many people fear that fumes from the formaldehyde can leach out of the final product and contaminate the air in the living space.

There being no internationally enforced standards for the manufacture of bamboo flooring, one can find a broad range of quality among the available offerings. At this stage in the development of the market for this material, it might be wise to deal with large retailers who might be expected to conduct their own testing, and who have the clout to ensure that the products that end up on their shelves are not only ecologically safe, but durable as well.

Bamboo flooring is a remarkably tough product. This is particularly so in light of the fact that bamboo is actually a form of grass rather than a tree, although it routinely grows to a height of twenty feet or even more. However, its woody composition has made it a building material of choice for centuries in parts of the world where it grows. It will stand up to years of exposure to the elements.

For those readers who claim a place on the green bandwagon, take heart. Bamboo is extremely ecologically friendly. It grows very rapidly and has a very favorable ratio of oxygen and carbon dioxide production, so it isn’t destructive of the ozone layer. In fact, people who have planted bamboo as a decoration have often found that it is hard to contain in any given area, and will take over an entire yard and the neighbors’ yards if not carefully managed.

Returning to the theme of the lack of standards for the manufacture of bamboo flooring, these products may be installed in a variety of ways. Give careful consideration to this aspect of the product if you intend to install it yourself.

Some kinds of bamboo flooring are meant for installation using staples driven by an air tool. Others are meant for gluing, and it’s critical that the recommended adhesive be used. Some brands of bamboo flooring are intended for floating installation as is common with the laminate flooring products most common in the United States. Among these products, there are variations in the underlayment required and the connections between the boards.

If you are considering installing a strand woven bamboo floor it’s incumbent upon you to research the products available. The best means of doing this is to consult with a knowledgeable sales person. Don’t be afraid to question them fully, and if you have any doubt about what they say, request documentation.

Common Misunderstandings about Salt Free Water Softeners

nuvoH2O Studio Salt-Free Water Softener System (Standard)Having soft water in your home is generally understood to be a good and desirable thing. It helps make your clothes last longer as well as your household appliances, improves the suppleness and general health of your skin, and may have other benefits. Not so well understood and often a point of confusion is the benefit or lack thereof of a salt free water softener. This article will discuss the most common misunderstandings that people have when they begin researching their water softening options.

1. They don’t know what a water softener is – the definition.

If you’re in the market for a water softening solution then it’s important to know what it is that you’re actually looking for. The industry standard definition of a water softener is a device that physically removes hardness from water to levels at or below 1 grain per gallon. What is water hardness? Water hardness generally refers to the amount of calcium and magnesium present in a measured amount of water (usually expressed per gallon in the US).

2. They have either never heard of a descaler before or are confused about the difference between a descaler and true water softeners.

Isn’t a descaler something you use on fish? If you’ve never heard of a water descaler before then this might be your first thought. So what’s the difference between a descaler and a water softener? A true water softener adheres to the definition given above. A descaler, on the other hand, simply passes an electric current through the water at its source which causes the scale that is present in the water to stay suspended in the water. This has the benefit of minimizing the potential for the scale to become deposited along the inside of pipes, the tile in your shower, and other places where scale tends to build up. However, it does not remove the scale; it just passes it on through the line. A water softener, in contrast, does in fact remove the minerals that cause the water to be considered hard in the first place.

3. They think that they’ll get the same benefits from a salt free water softener as they would get from a traditional salt based water softener.

As explained above in answer to question number two, this is not the case.

4. They don’t know why or if they even need a water softener.

This is a question that each person will have to decide for him or herself. To aid you in that decision, here are some things to consider:

  • According to the Culligan water softener company there is a Purdue University study that observes that fabrics washed in hard water tend to wear out as much as 15 percent faster than fabrics that are washed in soft water. (Benefits of Using Soft vs. Hard Water in Laundering Operations – Water Quality Research Council, Purdue University)
  • Household appliances as well as the pipes throughout your house operate more efficiently when combined with soft water.
  • If you use a reverse osmosis system for your drinking water (highly recommended) then running soft water to this appliance will make the filters last longer. This is because they won’t have to work as hard filtering out the hard water which will have already been removed by the water softener.
  • Some people report that washing with soft water makes you feel “not quite clean”. This could be attributed to the fact that when soap and mineral scum are absent (as is the case when using soft water) then your natural body oils make your skin feel.. well.. oilier – which some people correlate with feeling slimy.

Now that some of those misunderstandings have been cleared up, hopefully the right decision will be a little easier for you to make.

Three Ways to Make Gutter Cleaning Easier

WORKING Gutter Getter Gutter Scoop [Misc.]If you are anything like me, then you do not enjoy gutter cleaning. This home maintenance chore is not only messy, but it can be dangerous and scary if you are afraid of heights or not used to working on a ladder. That is why I am always looking for ways to make gutter cleaning easier. The three tips here will help.

The first way I can help you to make your gutter cleaning easier is to recommend some gutter cleaning tools. If you are going to be cleaning your gutters by hand then you will want a gutter cleaning tool called a gutter scoop. This is a plastic scoop with high sides, a long handle, a an large capacity that you can use to scoop debris out of the gutters. It is much better than scooping by hand. If you have decided that you are willing to use water in your gutter cleaning, then you should use a gutter cleaning wand. The wand has a nozzle on the end of it which converts your normal water stream from a garden hose into a high pressure water stream which can push out debris and break up clogs. The only downside to this gutter tool is that you will get the sides of your home dirty when the debris sprays out of the gutters. But even with that set back it is still faster and more efficient to use this gutter cleaning tool.

You may be reluctant to do your own gutter cleaning because you are afraid of the possible dangers. One way to make gutter cleaning easier is to properly protect yourself from those dangers. First, make sure that you are comfortable working on ladders and that you know the rules for both an A frame ladder and an extension ladders. Next, make sure you wear the proper personal protective equipment. You will need a face mask to protect you from breathing in mold spores and work gloves to protect your hands from coming into contact with bacteria. If you cannot comply with these safety requirements, then you probably shouldn’t be cleaning your own gutters. Professional gutter cleaning services are a perfectly valid option.Thermwell Prods. Co. VX620 Plastic Gutter Guard

The third way you can make gutter cleaning easier is to eliminate the need to do gutter cleaning at all. You can accomplish this by installing gutter guards. Gutter guards come in two different styles. The first style is the gutter screen. This gutter mesh covers the gutter opening so that no debris larger than the holes in the gutter mesh will make it into the gutters. The only downside is that you need to keep the mesh from getting covered with debris. The second gutter guard style is a solid gutter guard that uses water adhesion to direct water into the gutter system.

How to Save Money on Concrete Pavers

Patios, Driveways, and Plazas: The Pattern Language of Concrete Pavers (Schiffer Book for Designers)When you are installing a new concrete pavers project around your home, you’ll be thinking about more than the type of pavers you’ll choose and the design you lay them in. Most likely, you will spend most of your time worrying about the pavers cost that you’ll have to pay. And for good reason – they are expensive. Concrete pavers do represent a good investment, of course, but you’ll also want to keep in mind that there are ways to bring down the total cost of the paver project. Here are the best ways to save money on your next paver project.

First, you can save money on the project itself by lowering the scale. For instance, you can decrease the total square footage; this will obviously lower the costs of everything involved. If you want to keep the project the same size, you can simplify the design to make the amount of labor and materials required decrease, thus lowering the price.

You can also try to save money on the paver materials themselves. For instance, you can save money on the pavers by buying them used off craigslist, or trying to find a deal at a local mason supply yard.

Perhaps one of the best ways to save on your next paving stone project is to shave how much you’ll have to pay a contractor. You can get multiple bids in an effort to get the lowest possible price on the application. Indeed, in a perfect world, you can do the project yourself – this will save you the most amount of money, as you’ll do all the labor yourself and will only have to ‘pay’ for your own time. However, you should only do this if you know how to do the work properly – if you don’t, it can come back to haunt you.

A cheap way to save heat loss

Regardless of whether you think that global warming is down to man-made causes or it is just a natural cycle, we should do all that we can to reduce waste. If you were to look at your home through a thermal camera you would see that windows and doors are like a massive gateway allowing heat to escape and although modern glazing limits the heat transfer and therefore insulates the home better the older type of glazing – of which there is still a lot about – is simply terrible. The same goes for front doors and for that matter any external doors – the older the door, the worse it will be in terms of the amount of heat that it lets escape from your home.

There is a very simple way to reduce the amount of heat that escapes from your home everyday and that is to use a draught excluder around and at the base your doors. Now, door draught excluders come in a number of different formats; you can get the foam strip that goes around doorways but sometimes it is the gap at the base of the door that is the worst culprit for allowing heat to escape. For that this there is only one answer – that sausage dog draught excluder that your nan used to have! I say this half in jest but actually this sort of draught excluder really does do an excellent job and can introduce some comedy into your home.

Of course you know not limited to using a sausage dog type draught excluder and there are many modern and contemporary forms of this home accessory. It is really is a good way of getting some personality in to your home whilst preventing the heat from escaping your home. If you don’t fancy a comedy draught excluder you can always opt for the sort that have some fine bristles on the bottom that fill the gap between doorframe and the bottom the door. This is a much more subtle and more permanent solution but it certainly doesn’t do the job as well.

HVAC Information

HVAC covers the closely related areas of heating, ventilation and air conditioning essential for the comfort of any vehicle or home. These three processes all use technology designed to shift air around to either change the temperature or keep the environment fresh.

Nowadays, all three are combined in what is known as an HVAC system (more commonly known as climate control). These systems circulate air around a building or vehicle through a series of ducts and vents. Heating is achieved by forcing air which has been warmed using a furnace, boiler, or electric heating elements through ducts which lead around the house.

An alternative method is to pump heated fluid around the structure to warm it up. Ventilation is much simpler and involves taking the old, stale air from inside a room or vehicle and replacing it with fresher air from outside. This can be done by forcing air through a series of ducts using a fan. It can also be done naturally by installing trickle vents into walls or simply opening a window. Air conditioning is a little more complicated as it involves the removal of heat. Through a series of compressors, ducts and pumps, the air is cooled down and then pumped inside. The ducts for central air conditioning units have to be fairly bulky and so can be impossible to install in some older buildings. Fortunately, there are smaller units available which have been designed for individual rooms.

An HVAC system has to have several additional properties apart from shifting air around. It has to be quiet so that you can sleep while it works. It also has to be energy efficient meaning that you can leave it on for a while without having to use a lot of electricity or spend a lot of money on utility bills. A superior HVAC system with these properties will make any environment easy to live in. For even more HVAC information, check out the Heating and Air Guide.

DIY Conservatories – Some FAQs

In these times of economic difficulties, many people have taken their homes off the market for sale and instead want to expand the floor area of the home.

One of the ways of doing this is to construct a conservatory.  However, even though conservatories per square metre offer excellent value, they still cost money. An option that some consider is to construct a DIY conservatory, which means basically that you construct the conservatory yourself.  Below are some frequently asked questions that homeowners put regarding DIY conservatories.

Is it difficult to build a conservatory?

If you have some experience in building, or if you are a committed home improvement buff or DIY expert, then there is no reason why you should not be able to successfully construct a DIY conservatory.  However, if you have little or no experience in these matters you should engage the assistance of somebody who does, or get a professional builder to do the job.

Can I build any type of conservatory?

On of the advantages of building your own conservatory would be that you need not be limited to the designs and styles that the manufacturing companies are offering.  With some imagination and research, you could come up with a bespoke design and then find a manufacturer that is would be capable of producing the materials to suit.

Do I need planning permission for my DIY conservatory?

Whether you are constructing a DIY conservatory or getting a builder to supply and build your conservatory, you should always check up whether or not you need planning permission.  In many cases planning permission is not required, especially if your conservatory is kept under a certain size, but sizes and laws can vary between planning departments, so it is always best to check with your local planning office and get clearance before commencing to purchase any materials.

5 Steps Towards Tackling Those High uPVC Window Prices

So you have decided to install those uPVC windows into your home after all.  Well done – you have just made an excellent decision that will help to improve the heat retention capability of you home and cut down on your heating bills.

In this article we will give you a five-step process to help you go about selecting the best quality windows for your home.  As uPVC window prices vary so much between manufacturers, we will also discuss the best ways to get great value in the uPVC windows you purchase.

1.    Carry out plenty of research into uPVC windows.  Start with such sites as http://upvcwindowsguide.com, find out about different styles and types of uPVC windows and work out what best suits your home.  From there progress to individual sites offering windows for sale and compare uPVC window prices.
2.    Be aware of the reputation of the uPVC window supplier that you are dealing with.  Can you find out more about the manufacturer’s reputation?  Are there testimonials on the sites that you can follow up?  You may prefer to deal with a local supplier that has slightly higher uPVC window prices, but that you have heard good things about.
3.    Find out whether you need planning permission to install new windows into your home.  Many assume they do not and this can lead to embarrassment afterwards.
4.    Most uPVC windows should have a multi-point locking system built into the frames.  These are excellent systems that will enhance the security of your home.  If this system is lacking in the windows you are considering purchasing, you may wish to re-consider.
5.    Consider the ‘R-value’ of the window units you are interested in.  this is a measure of the resistance of the window unit to losing heat and the higher the value the better.  Low uPVC window prices are only worthwhile if the windows are of good quality.

Matching Fixtures: Accentuating Frameless Shower Doors

If you want your home to look the very best it possibly can, you have to pay attention to every detail. Many people focus too much of their attention on large items in the home. They may replace furniture, install new carpeting, or repaint all the walls. These are all great improvements that could be made in any home; however, it is often the smaller items that draw the attention of visitors. One of the most often overlooked items in the home are the fixtures throughout. It can be a grave mistake to mix and match lighting fixtures, door handles, and drawer pulls.

If you happen to be selling your home, matching the fixtures throughout could be something that sets your home apart from the competition. Anything that you can do to give you an edge over other homeowners would be foolish to not take advantage of. It can be quite easy and inexpensive to change out the fixtures so that they match one another throughout the entire home. For instance, many people install frameless shower doors in their bathrooms but leave the hardware that was included with the system in place. This can look odd if the shower door has a stainless steel handle and the other fixtures in the bathroom are all copper. You can easily change out the frameless shower door hardware with something that matches the surrounding fixtures. If this is not the case, then the fixtures surrounding the frameless shower door may be changed to match it.

Even if you are not selling your home, it is a good idea to match the fixtures throughout. Any time you have visitors or family over, matching fixtures will allow the decor and style of your home to flow throughout. Having mismatched fixtures throughout your home will draw the attention away from the larger items that you take pride in.

Should I Get A Copper Outdoor Sconce Or Iron Mini Chandeliers

If you are wondering or you should get an copper outdoor sconce or iron mini chandeliers but do not know which one to pick then you have come to the right place because today we are going to be talking about the benefits of owning each type of outdoor light fixture.

The first light fixture that we are going to be examining is the copper outdoor sconce. First before we go any further lets first define what a sconce is. Sconces are light fixtures that are attached to a wall by a bracket and require no assistance from a ground rod or ceiling rod. Their wires are also installed and hid inside of the wall. Now that we have go that out of the way lets now look at why someone would want to buy a copper version of one of these lights. First off copper is a great outdoor metal because of its weathering abilities as it does not rust or weaken with deterioration over time. This is crucial because it will be subjected to weather of all types and will be in the same position for an extended amount of time.  These are great lights to have if you are in need of some indirect path lighting or lights to help you open a door at night; they are also good lights to use when you just want a little bit of ambient light to set the mood for your outdoor occasions.

The next type of light that we are going to be talking about is the iron mini chandelier. This type of light fixture is defined as a light fixture that is suspended from the ceiling and has two or more arms. These are great outdoor light fixtures because they can just like the sconce handle a lot of abuse from the elements. The reason that this stands true is that for the most part iron comes treated with a rust resistant paint that helps to keep the iron in prime shape.  These are great for lighting up large areas that you would otherwise have to use several small lights to achieve the same amount of lighting.

Benefits Of A Carport Made From Wood

Carports are a great way to provide extra garage and vehicular storage space without the price tag of building a full garage.  You can have the structures built out of a variety of different materials, including metal, aluminum, and PVC, but none of these provide the aesthetic benefits and long term durability that a wood carport offers.

So why of all the different types of carports available should you consider building one out of wood?  There are a number of answers to that question.  For one, wood is a more attractive looking material than steel, aluminum or PVC.  It blends in nicely with the rest of your home and also looks good with your surrounding landscaping.

Another reason to choose wood for your car storage needs is that if you want to have a carport that is attached to your home or that sits right alongside it but looks like it belongs as part of the home, wood is the only material that can offer that benefit.  If you build the structure out of metal or some type of plastic support poles with a metal, vinyl or canvas top it will look like what it is – a more portable and less expensive structure.  If, on the other hand, you build the structure out of wood, it will look like a substantial structure that was made to go with the exterior of your home.

An additional benefit of wood is that it can be painted or stained to be any shade or color that you want.  Again, this adds to the aesthetic look of the structure and doesn’t make it stand out like a sore thumb from your home.

But, aesthetics aren’t the only benefits of carports that are made out of wood.  These structures are durable, long lasting, and able to withstand heavy use.  They do require some ongoing maintenance over the years to keep them looking their best, but that is just a small price to pay for the benefits they offer.

Benefits of Porch Awnings

If you currently have a porch that is not already covered, then you may be wondering about whether or not there is any benefit to having an awning built to cover your porch.  In fact, porch awnings offer a number of benefits, which is why so many homeowners choose to build them or have them built by a professional.

So, what are the benefits of these types of awnings?

Shade – We all know how dangerous the sun can now be to our skin, so having a place that we can enjoy outdoors that is shaded from the sun is important.  By offering a comfortable place in the shade, we can still enjoy the great outdoors without having to be too concerned about excessive sun exposure.

Privacy – Although awnings are typically only built overhead and not along the sides of a porch, having the covered space still provides a sense of privacy, since the porch area is not completely out in the open for all to see.  This is especially true if you have multi-story houses nearby that otherwise look right down at your porch space.

Protection – Many people choose to outfit their porches with furniture, cushions and even rugs and although there are plenty of products in all of these categories made for outdoor use, having a protective covering overhead prolongs the life of these accessories since they are not constantly subject to sun exposure (which causes fading), moisture (which causes a buildup of mold and mildew and can also expedite deterioration), and dirt and debris (such as bird droppings and objects falling from trees overhead).

Decorative – When you have an awning installed over your porch, it makes the outside open space feel more like an outdoor room.   That gives you the opportunity to decorate it as such, and to also add interesting features, such as awning lights,  sheer curtains or shades.

There are numerous benefits to having an awning built over your porch area, so if you do not already have one, it is certainly worth looking into building one for your family’s ongoing enjoyment and protection.

Garage Floor Safety Tip

During the winter garages are a big factor in accidents at the home.  The vast majority of these accidents involve slips and falls usually as a person is getting out of the car arriving home.  Falling in a garage can be very dangerous because the floors are almost always concrete and that is a very unforgiving surface to land on.  In recent years most municipalities have enacted laws requiring bicycle riders to wear helmets because of the damage which can be caused just by falling on a road.  The same possibility exists if you slip and hit your head in the garage.  Brain damage is quite possible so slips and falls should be alleviated.

The best way to make this area is your home safer is to apply an anti-slip garage floor sealant.  This will actually accomplish two things.  First it will give you better traction when the floor is wet and slick and, second, it will protect the floor from damage like chipping.  The procedure is really quite easy but it does require about two half days of work if you are going to do it yourself.  The best sealant to apply is an epoxy because it cures hard and it is easy to apply the non-slip medium as it cures.

Epoxies consist of two parts a resin and a hardener.  After the floor surface is prepared the two ingredients are mixed together and rolled out on the floor.  Usually a nap paint roller is used for applying the garage floor sealer.  Once the floor has been coated the anti-slip ingredient is spread over the top.  This is usually a gritty material like sand but you can’t just use regular beach sand because of the salt content.  The little sand grains each act like a small gripper and this make it almost impossible to have your feet slip out from underneath you even if you have rain water dripping on an oil slick.

This summer would be a great time to make your garage floor safer for next winter.

Installing Travertine Mosaic Tiles

Arizona Tile 4 by 4-Inch Tumbled Travertine Tile, Alexandria, 5-Total Square FeetThere are many options available when you start to make choices about your travertine bathroom.  Of course, there is the color of the tile which can range form an almost ivory all way to a fairly deep brown and also a redder tint.  The basic hues you choose will be determined by several factors related to your over all motif but one of the big considerations is the size of the bathroom and the natural lighting.  The smaller the area and the less natural light present generally leaves you choosing a lighter hued travertine bathroom tile as opposed to a darker one.  This is a basic truth in home decorating:  The smallest the space the lighter the color which is needed to give it as expansive a feel as possible.

After choosing which color range you are interested in, the next step is to decide on the size.  These can range from 12” X 12” tiles all the way down to mosaic travertine tiles which can be a small as 1” X 1” or 2” X 2”.  Again, the size of the room will play a part in determining which size to choose.  The smaller the area the smaller the tiles is a general rule of thumb.  Many people choose a large tile for the floor, a medium tile for the walls and then a mosaic for the actual shower enclosure.  These sizes seem to work well together to break up the monotony of a single pattern.  I have seen large tiles in a shower but it only worked because the walls of the rest of the bathroom were white sheet rock.  This offset the large tile size very nicely.

Travertine mosaic tiles usually come pre-applied to a mesh and thus are very easy to install.  The mesh is one foot square so you can really put up a lot of these small tiles in a very short time.  The grouting takes a little longer than a big tile but the end result is worth it.

Using the Electronic Push Button Lock

While mechanical push button locks work fine for most locations, there are some places where the electronic push button door lock would be preferable to install. Mechanical locks are somewhat restricted with the amount of access codes you can use, and they do not have any real programmable features that allow different access at different times. This is where the electronic lock differs. With the electronic lock you can have many different pin codes authorizing access to different sets of people at different times.  You can also have times where certain functions override others, and in general there is a lot more you can do with the electric push button lock.

They are perfect to use in busy office complexes, or factories or hospitals where there are different work shifts for example. Anywhere there are a lot of people needing to have access to a building should consider installing an electronic lock. It does away completely with the need for anyone to have a key, and for all of the complications that arise when trying to keep track of a large number of keys–something that can be a real headache to do. If someone gets ahold of the pin code for the electronic lock it is a simple matter to change the pin code and inform those who need to know.  If a key gets stolen, that is a much bigger deal. You have to change the lock, and then get hundreds of keys made and pass them onto everyone.

While not exactly a con when it comes to the electronic lock, but more something that needs to be kept in mind; this type of lock needs to be hooked up to some sort of power source. Quite often these locks can be battery powered. Some, especially the larger units, may need to be hooked up to the electricity, which means that installation of these models is also a bit more complex.

Still, they are the lock of choice not only for many office or apartment buildings but also for many homes these days as well.

Flooring, the Basement and Other Home Decisions

A lot of time, when people are decorating their homes, the basement is a forgotten left over.  This is a shame because it is often one of the larger rooms and a house.  More often than not it is left to its utilitarian purpose without any kind of thought put into its decorating scheme.  Personally, it is one of those projects that I have chosen to put off repeatedly.  I don’t know why.  It just sort of happens as other things come up one after another.

If people were to take the time to make the very most of that space, it could still be functional but also an area to be proud of when people come to visit.  Depending on your individual circumstances, you may or may not need a lot of work done.  I know that in my circumstance, I have been thinking about doing some light remodeling, with a major portion of the work being the floor.  We have been considering strand woven bamboo flooring for our upstairs, because we like the way it looks and its durability, but in our basement, we are not sure what we will do yet.

Our overall goal is to make a full conversion into a game room, but there is the problem of forcing ourselves to not use the basement as a storage area.  It could definitely be worse.  Our first house was most definitely much more of a fixer-upper.  Absolutely nothing had ever been done to make the basement anything like an entertainment area and we had moisture issues until we spent over four thousand dollars getting things fixed so that we could sell the house.  Live and learn.  I would never purchase a home with known water issues again.  Fighting the mildew is a losing battle until you break down and pay to get things fixed.  It is definitely not recommended by me.
